Our mother, Belle was a dedicated Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), serving over 30 years between Allegheny General and McGee Hospitals, mainly caring for newborn babies.
A member of Emmanuel Church since 1987, Belle loved children and taught Sunday school for many years. She also was the go-to person for heading up luncheons for various Church functions at Emmanuel. Belle made sure that there would always be wholesome food and plenty of it.
After volunteering in the Healthy Start Program she and her best friend Sara White started the “Friends of the Family” program at Emmanuel. Together they would visit new mothers, teaching them how to tend to their babies, feeding, bathing, playing, as well as taking delicious meals to these new mothers.
When visiting new mothers became impractical, God re-directed Belle and Sara’s passion to care for others in a totally new direction — taking food and toiletries to elderly shut-ins in the Sheffield and Presley Buildings on Cedar Avenue. These became known to the congregation as “The High Rises.” The ladies recognized a need for prayer for these folks and recruited Nicole Butler to initiate prayer for them during the vista.
When Sara White passed away, Belle recruited Tiffany Eberhardt, Rhonda Bennet, and Betty Durah to keep Friends of the Family going and help with the visits. Belle engaged the congregation to donate supplies and keep them all in prayer, and gave regular and excited updates to the congregation about how God was working in the lives of the High Rise residents through their outreach.
Sara and Belle, the “dynamite duo,” had also enjoyed taking part in the ministries of the Northside Christian Health Center. This is where they first met Dr. Mark Guy, who, with his wife, Christine, are now regular attendees.
Mom loved the Lord and Emmanuel church and dedicated her heart and soul to any task set before her.
Since we cannot have a regular service and wake, we are asking our Emmanuel family and friends is to join us in prayers of thanksgiving for Belle’s life and ministry. Will you please pray The Lord’s Prayer with us on Wednesday, April 8th at 11:00 AM, during her burial in Uniondale Cemetary?
